BEFORE YOU GET YOUR BOXER PUPPY HOME

The wait is over and it's finally time to bring your new Boxer puppy home.  But before that happens, there are a few preparations that need to take place.

Create a safe and friendly environment for your new puppy by following this simple checklist:

***Make sure all poisonous household items are securely stored out of the puppy's reach.

***Move or remove any poisonous plants.

***Look at your house from a puppy's point of view and remove any hazardous items.

There are certain things your puppy will need from day one, so it's best to purchase these items in advance, if possible.  These items can be purchased from your local pet store.

*Exercise Pen
*Collar & Harness (we do not reccomend leashes)
*Crate Training Kennel
*Crate Bed
*Puppy/Baby Gate
*Food & Water Bowl
*Nutri-Cal
*Pro Pac Puppy Food
*Puppy Treats
*Brush & Comb
*Puppy Shampoo & Conditioner
*Safe, appropriate toys (As a general rule, if the toy can fit comfortably in a puppy's mouth, it is too small.)

WHAT YOUR BOXER PUPPY IS EATING NOW

We feed our puppies Pro Pac Performance Puppy Food (purple bag).  They will come with a little bag of Pro Pac on the flight.  Once you receive your puppy, you are welcome to switch them over to any feed you like, contingent that the feed you are switching them over to is puppy food, and has at least 30% protein & 18% fat.  However, we do recommend that you continue the Pro Pac Puppy Performance!  It is one of the higher priced feeds, but also one of the best quality feeds available.  If you should decide to switch them to something else, please do it slowly.  Use the bag of feed that we sent along and mix 75% Pro Pac with 25% of the feed you have decided on.  Do that for a couple of days and then go to 50% / 50% and so on until they are completely switched over to the new feed.  Puppies intestinal tracts are so sensitive, and if you switch them over too quickly, they will get diarrhea, and blood in their stools.

If you cannot find the Pro Pac Puppy Performance feed or you are unable to use the formula given above to switch your puppy over to a new feed, then we recommend mixing the new feed with 50% cottage cheese.  The cottage cheese will do several things: 1) It will promote your puppy to eat the new feed, and 2) Will coat the puppies digestive tract to ease the transition between feeds.  Follow the formula given above substituting the cottage cheese for the Pro Pac slowly weaning the puppy off the cottage cheese entirely over to the new feed.  We recommend that food and water be available at all times so your new puppy can eat and drink whenever he/she wants to whether he is in the crate or out on the floor playing.  We have found that this works the best, prevents over-eating, and promotes good health.

AFTER YOU GET YOUR BOXER PUPPY HOME

Your going to want to start potty training immediately once you bring your new puppy home, so for you new puppy parents, please refer to our Potty Training  recommendations section below, or you are welcome to try whatever method suits you best.  Two products we highly recommend are Bene-Bac and Nutri-Cal.  You can find both at your local Pet Store, Petsmart, Pet Co, or your Veterinarian's office.  These are excellent products to give your new puppy right after you pick him/her up at the airport and for the first couple of days while your new puppy is adjusting to his or her new home.  Bene-Bac is a beneficial micro-organism and is the equivalent for puppies what yogurt is for us.  It has good micro-organisms that help with stress due to changing environments and the stress on the digestive tract due to a change in feed.  Nutri-Cal is a dietary supplement that also helps with stress.  Some puppies will experience stress on the flight, their new environment, and a change in feed and so forth while others won't.  Regardless, puppies have very sensitive digestive tracts so these are very good products to give them, that can only do them good, and will bring their digestive tracts, and stress levels into balance.

For the first year, we recommend that you do not take your puppy shopping with you to places such as Petsmart, Petco, or any other type of pet stores etc.  Just like at the Doctor's office, you never know what virus, or illness your puppy could pick up there.  It's better to be safe then sorry.  We recommend you at least wait until your puppy is one year old and fully vaccinated before you take him/her to places like this!

Again, if you have any questions or concerns either before or after you have received your Boxer puppy, please feel free to contact us, or contact your local Veterinarian!

POTTY TRAINING YOUR BOXER PUPPY

Ah the age old and oft asked question, "How do I train my puppy to use the potty outside?"  There are a variety of  different methods to train your puppy to go potty outside, and  not in the house.  Many books exist to help and teach new puppy parents along in this process.  However, because so many of the people we deal with are first time puppy owners, I've decided to give my input.

We have found this method to work well, and we along with many others have had tremendous success with this simple and easy process.  In the beginning, it will take time, and some work.  But with some consistent diligent effort, success will follow in a few short weeks, and results will be seen almost immediately.

There are a few inexpensive items you need to purchase, or obtain before you bring your new puppy home, and before you begin potty training.  1) A pet crate training kennel which will cost around $40-$100.  2) A porous object such as a fist sized stone, that will be used for the puppy to go potty on throughout the training process.  It doesn't have to be a stone, but it cannot be a toy, or something the puppy believes to be a playing toy.  It needs to be porous, because we want the urine, and feces to permeate throughout the object so the scent will be fixated on it.  3) Some pet stain and odor remover powder, and Clorox bleach spray or disinfectant wipes.  Items number Three are for any accidents that may occur throughout the potty training.  Finally, 4) A kitchen timer (you know the old fashioned timer with the turn dial that goes tick-tick-tick-rrrriiiinnng).  Okay, let us begin:

Potty training is to commence immediately once the puppy is brought home!  The more time you are able to spend with your puppy the first two weeks the better, and quicker your puppy will learn where he can and cannot go potty.  So if you are a stay at home mom, or work out of the home, you are in an ideal situation.  However, for most of you out there who have weekly work schedules, no problem!  Okay, set the timer to go off every 15 minutes, and when the timer goes off, take the puppy outside, set the object in front of 'em, and wait and be patient to let him do his thing.  Obviously, he isn't gonna go potty every time the timer goes off, but after a few weeks, he will get the hint.  Make sure he goes potty on the object, and every time the timer goes off, make sure to take him outside to the object he goes potty on.  This will train him to use potty outside and not in the house!  Make sure to consistently use the command "Go Potty" when you take your puppy to the designated potty area.

The puppy training crate is used to confine the puppy, and does not allow him to go potty all over the house marking his territory while you are away.  This is extremely important, and a failure to do this will also result in a failed attempt to train your puppy.  So, whenever you are unable to look after your puppy i.e, at night, or must leave your puppy home for any reason during potty training; whether to go to work, or shopping, or whatever, the puppy is to always be confined to the training crate, or some other confined, and I do mean confined space that is off the floor, and will not allow the puppies urine or feces to come into contact with the floor.  Do not leave the training object in the training crate with the puppy.  Use this only when you take him outside.

While you are at home, allow the puppy to have free reign of the house as this will also be his house.  If there are certain rooms you do not want the puppy in, then keep those doors closed, or use the puppy/baby gate that you purchased before you brought your little one home.  .  However, when you are home, be sure to have the puppy out of the training crate as a failure to do this will stint the house potty training.  Remember to put your puppy back in the training crate at night while you sleep until your puppy has completed his or her training.  The point here is that your puppy should only be out of the training crate and have free reign of the house while you are able to tend to him or her.

Since the puppy will be roaming the house while you are at home, there are bound to be accidents.  This is where the pet odor, and stain remover powder, along with the Clorox bleach disinfectant spray or wipes come into play.  Use the Clorox bleach spray or wipes to clean up when there is an accident on wood floors, ceramic tile, or vinyl flooring.  Use the pet stain and odor remover powder on carpet accidents.  It is important that when an accident occur, the puppy be rebuked in a stern voice, and the accident be cleaned up promptly, and thoroughly.  (Remember to only rebuke your puppy when you actually witness an accident occur, otherwise the puppy will not know what exactly he is being punished for.)  All of the scent from the accident needs to be removed, or the puppy will continue to go potty in the places he has marked around the house.  Dogs have extremely keen sense of smell!  Just to give you an idea of just how keen a dog's nose is:  A dog's, or wolf's keen sense of smell is why they bury the dead six feet deep, because six feet under ground is the threshold of just how deep they can smell a rotting corpse (excuse the language).

You will continue this process until the puppy is fully house trained.  You will find that Boxers are extremely intelligent, so in most cases house potty training will only take several weeks.   Now remember your new puppy is a living breathing organism, not some play toy you can put away in the closet when you grow bored, or tired of playing with it.  So be patient, and exercise a lot of love as you would your own child!!! :D
